Nasser Hussain has an answer, and you’ll forgive him if he sounds like a throwback to another era.
“I establish ground rules,” says Hussain, associate director of the Civic Life and Thought Initiative at Duke. “This is a classroom where we’re going to conduct discussions with respect and civility. If you establish the ground rules early, a lot of times you don’t get to the ‘what if’ questions.”
But could it be that simple? In an era of cancel culture and vast political and ideological divides, can simply mandating courtesy and respect work?”

But it did.”

He warned of the dangers this trend poses to both national security and democratic stability, urging for depoliticized military leadership and greater civilian oversight to maintain institutional integrity. Feaver discusses how presidential campaigns have politicized the military for years, but he argues that it is time to end this trend. He noted that this behavior “damages the military’s status as a nonpartisan institution that will support civilian control no matter who wins the presidency.”
