Sanford Faculty Nick Carnes and Kristin Goss have been named Duke distinguished professors. Professor Carnes joined Duke faculty in 2011 and will be the Z. Smith Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Public Policy. Carnes’s research centers the obstacles facing lower-income, working-class individuals from serving as elected politicians in the U.S. and worldwide. Professor Goss joined Duke faculty in 2005 and has been named the Susan B. King Distinguished Professor of Public Policy. Goss is the director of the Duke in D.C. program and the Duke Center for the Study of Philanthropy and Voluntarism. She has expertise in gun politics, a topic on which she has written or co-produced three books. Sanford Dean Judith Kelley congratulated the two on their appointments, stating that “together, their work brings light to crucial issues around our democracy and politics at every level of government, a cause so important today.”
