Professor Kate Whetten (they/them), co-director of Duke’s Sexual and Gender Minority Wellness Program and professor of Public Policy and Global Health, was featured for their work on Dandarah Rise, an app that has “saved lives.” They co-authored a study highlighting the app’s effectiveness in helping users report specific locations of violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals and connect to health services. Professor Whetten says they take this work “incredibly seriously” because they “[look] at LGBTQIA+ people as individuals with mental health and physical needs… as a result of what they face in their lives.”
