Professor Bruce Jentleson examines the relationship between the United States and Ukraine in The National Interest after the Biden administration’s decision to waive sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and Ukraine’s decision to allow a Chinese company to lease land in Crimea. Jentleson argues that there has been a consensus in the US regarding support for Ukraine, but this consensus may start to crack as both countries pursue their own interests. He suggests that Ukraine needs to engage in strategic thinking and develop a long-term plan to strengthen its relationship with the US, while also pursuing a balanced foreign policy that does not overly rely on any one country: “Soft spots in what otherwise is a consensus are more politically manageable than cracks in its base.”
