Polis Student Committee member and co-founder of The Lemur Sherman Criner wrote for The Chronicle on the problems with Duke’s Inclusive Excellence Working Group’s drafting principles, which Duke administrators published on June 9. While the language of the principles seems uncontroversial at first, Criner says, its neutral wording implicitly “takes sides” on many contentious issues. He writes that if Duke truly wants to invite open discussion, it cannot close debate by inherently “slanting” its values.
