Danny Werfel, former IRS Commissioner and current POLIS Distinguished Fellow, wrote an article in Bloomberg Tax condemning the political leaders who have “shrugged” in response to the Trump administration’s mass layoffs. The administration’s layoffs will have consequences, he warns, ranging from how many hours you’re on hold with the IRS to how many days you might wait for critical aid from FEMA. Werfel compares the current political turmoil to turbulence on the plane, where flight attendants serve as symbol of calm and elected officials are meant to offer civic clarity. But unlike the plane example, he says that leaders who act as if nothing is amiss are not “escaping a broken system—they’re helping to break it.”
