Professor Peter Feaver and Heidi Urben report on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of an all-volunteer force (AVF) in the U.S. military. They highlight the current recruiting crisis that has plagued each of the armed services. The Army has been the hardest hit, failing to reach its recruiting target by 25 percent in 2022. Feaver and Urben argue that the politicization of the AVF is a primary driver in the low recruitment numbers. They write, “One of the most underappreciated threats to the long-term continuance of the AVF is the harmful effects partisan polarization has on the military and its relationship with society and civilian leaders today.”
