Professor Kate Whetten was featured in a Duke Global Health Institute article highlighting a 15-year partnership with the Ethiopian Stand for Vulnerable Organization (SVO) that has benefitted “the socioeconomic stability and physical and mental health of Ethiopian youth and their families.”
Whetten attributes Duke’s community-driven approach to their longevity in a region suspicious of foreign influence. They argue, “We were allowed to stay and help them [SVO] build, but really, it was their creativity. What we can do now is to learn from that.”
