Professor Jay Pearson describes his experience as a Black Durham resident who has been confronted with multiple unjustified traffic stops in The 9th Street Journal. Pearson notes that the encounters are traumatizing, mentioning the “stress response that it elicits and what it does to me deep down inside.” The article suggests that Pearson’s experiences are not unique and that Black motorists are more likely to be stopped and searched by police than white motorists. Pearson provides a personal account of the disproportionate impact of traffic stops on Black drivers in Durham and to highlight the larger issue of racial profiling by law enforcement.
