Professor Asher Hildebrand on the NC Supreme Court and Redistricting, Charlotte Talks

 The 2024 state supreme court elections will be pivotal for the future of the Democratic Party. 

With 80 seats on the state supreme court up for election, and hot-button issues like abortion and gerrymandering going before state judges, have “underscored the importance for Democrats to elect liberal-leaning justices.” As seen in North Carolina, the new Republican majority has led to conservative victories on election and redistricting issues. Professor Mac McCorkle argues that the Democratic party needs a stronger message. “The message that you want judges who are going to make nonpartisan decisions, take the cases on, try to follow precedent, trying to follow legal reasoning rather than political reasoning…does not seem to capture the public’s imagination.”
