Professor Asher Hildebrand argues in Vanity Fair that, “If Democrats don’t hold onto the governorship and cut into the GOP’s supermajority in the legislature, it’s going to be a dire situation, far more dire than anything that we’ve seen in the state.’” The NC 2024 governor’s race is described as a “crucial test” for Democrats against a potentially extremist legislature. Hildebrand reflects that Obama’s win made many believe that North Carolina was “trending irrevocably in the direction of Democrats.” However, he asserts that “it’s [now] pretty evident that demographics is not destiny, or that if it is destiny, it’s happening at a much slower pace than many had hoped at the time.”
