Head of the NC Democratic Party Anderson Clayton was highlighted in The Washington Post as the youngest state Democratic chair in the country. Her platform ran on the idea that change should and can happen now, not future demographic changes.
She also argues that Democrats need young people from rural areas to flip North Carolina blue, an assertion she also made at the Polis sponsored conference “Politics, Policy, and a New Economic Strategy for Rural North Carolina” last Spring.
Professor Asher Hildebrand notes that while cities are becoming bluer, areas along the coast are becoming redder as retirees move out of urban areas. This continued GOP stronghold will be a challenge for Democrats. Yet, Clayton remains energized about Democrats future in North Carolina. “This is not a two-year rebuild of our party,” she said. “This is a 10-year rebuild of our state party because we’re not just looking at 2024. We’re looking at 2030.”
