On February 16 and 17, Duke University’s DeWitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy and University of North Carolina’s Center for Sustainability and Innovation in Local Media co-hosted the 2023 Local Journalism Researchers’ Workshop. The event, organized with the support of the Democracy Fund, brought together researchers across the academic, industry, non-profit, and government sectors whose work addresses contemporary issues confronting local journalism.
Polis Student Committee member Jamie Chornoby (MPP ’23) along with teammates Asa Royal, Pranav Athimuthu, and Leah Boyd, presented on a local news funding model, shared their model modifications, mapped out possible applications, and examined digital access issues. “The Local Journalism Researchers’ Workshop was a wonderful opportunity to share some of the work being done on media and democracy at Sanford. It was a great experience to connect with researchers and practitioners across sectors and think through how our work could impact the local news landscape in the United States.” – Jamie Chornoby
