On October 28th, the North Carolina Young People’s Voting Alliance and Duke Votes teamed up to host a Duke Democracy Day to motivate students to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.

Polis served as a proud co-sponsor of the day long activities as well as a State of Democracy Discussion with Michael Steele, former RNC Chairman and Lt. Governor of Maryland, and Political Analyst for the MSNBC. Michael Steele discussed the state of American democracy, the importance of civic engagement, and how students can shape America’s future.

This session was part of the larger student engagement initiative Democracy Day:

“For the first time in history, Duke University will host Democracy Day, a time dedicated to Duke student engagement in local, state, and national politics, on October 28th. Led by North Carolina Young People’s Alliance (NCYPA) and Duke Votes, the day will be filled with marches to the polls, guest speakers, and events sponsored by the Nasher Museum, Duke Arts, POLIS, American Grand Strategy, Duke Wellness, and more. As home to a young and diverse student population, Duke University has the unique ability to amplify underrepresented voices in the election of our future legislators.”
